Day 1MumbaiOn board
Make your way to Mumbai's grand Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus in the evening and settle into your cabin as the train sets off into the Maratha heartland.
Day 2NashikOn board
Start the morning with a stroll along the ghats of the Godavari river. Then drive out to the vineyards, walking among Chenin, Chardonnay and Shiraz vines before lunch on the estate. The train leaves Nashik in the early evening.

Day 3Ellora CavesOn board
A morning excursion takes you to Ellora, about 30 km from the city, where temples and monasteries are carved straight into a basalt hill. Return to the train for lunch and an afternoon at leisure, with cocktails as evening falls.

Day 4Ajanta CavesOn board
Leave the train for the World Heritage-listed Ajanta Caves, famed for their ancient Buddhist murals and sculpture. Back on board for a late lunch, the rest of the day is yours to enjoy the train's facilities.

Day 5KolhapurOn board
An afternoon city tour begins at the octagonal New Palace, now a museum. Browse the local market for handcrafted Kolhapuri sandals, enjoy tea with a folk dance performance, and visit the centuries-old Mahalakshmi temple before rejoining the train in the evening.
Day 6GoaOn board
Drive to Fontainhas, Goa's colourful old Latin quarter. Lunch is followed by a spice plantation tour and time to relax at a nearby beach, before returning to the train for dinner as it heads for Sawantwadi.

Drive to the village of Pinguli for a morning visit, then sit down to lunch at Sawantwadi Palace. Rejoin the train in the afternoon for the run back towards Mumbai.

Questions about this journey
Where does Maharashtra Splendour start and finish?
It is a round trip from Mumbai. You board at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus on the first evening and arrive back in Mumbai on the eighth day.
Does the journey visit both Ajanta and Ellora?
Yes. Ellora is visited on the morning of day three and Ajanta on day four, with lunch back on the train after each visit.
