Golden Eagle Silk Road Express: the observation car

Bar Car & Observation Car

The Bar Car is the train's social hub, entered through curved double doors inspired by the chariots of the Han Dynasty. A grand piano sets the mood for the evening, antique silverware and rare objects decorate the room, and cocktails and fine wines flow while guests swap stories of the day.

For quieter moments, the Observation Car wraps a 270-degree panoramic window, described as the largest train window in China, around the passing scenery. Carved wood and soft lighting recall ancient Chang'an and a map of the old Silk Road, and partitions can create a private reception room for four.

Two restaurant cars

The train has two restaurant cars. The Western-style car offers silver-service dining by liveried staff and can be set for banquet-style meals, while the Chinese-style car has intimate booth seating and focuses on fine local dishes.

Menus combine Western classics with the regional flavours of the Silk Road, using fresh ingredients bought from local markets along the way. The team caters for all dietary requirements, and in-cabin dining is available on request.

About the Golden Eagle Silk Road Express

What are the cabins like on the Golden Eagle Silk Road Express?

There are two categories, both fully en-suite. The Superior Cabin measures 11 m² with sofas by day and twin beds or a large double at night, while the Han Dynasty Suite offers 22.2 m² with a separate living room and a bathroom with bathtub and double sinks.

Which journeys does the train run?

We offer three journeys entirely aboard this train: Ancient China by Private Train from Beijing to Urumqi, Imperial China from Xi'an to Hong Kong, and Voyage to the Roof of the World from Beijing to Lhasa. The Grand Silk Road from Tashkent to Beijing also spends six nights on board after crossing Central Asia on the Golden Eagle.

How do I choose between the China journeys?

Ancient China follows the Silk Road west through the Gobi and Xinjiang. Imperial China heads east and south through Luoyang, Beijing, Shanghai, the Yangtze, Chengdu and Guilin to Hong Kong, and Voyage to the Roof of the World ends on the high-altitude railway to Lhasa.

How are the nights spent?

Most nights are spent on the train, often travelling overnight between destinations. Each journey also includes hotel nights at the start and end, such as the Four Seasons in Beijing, and some include a night in a hotel mid-journey.

What is included?

Fares include your cabin and listed hotel nights, guided excursions, transfers, luggage porterage, all gratuities, meals on board and in local restaurants, and drinks from the standard bar list. A doctor and medical facilities travel on board.

What is dining like on board?

There are two restaurant cars: a Western-style car with silver service and a Chinese-style car with booth seating and regional dishes. Menus draw on fresh local ingredients, and all dietary requirements can be catered for.

Can train timings change in China?

Yes. Rail schedules in China are set by the national railway authorities, so the train may occasionally arrive or leave early in the morning or late at night. Visiting hours or activities may then be adjusted, and any changes are shared once the timetable is confirmed.

How much does a journey cost, and when does the train run?

Live dates and fares are shown on this page, and our reservations team can help on (866) 484-7882.
