Overview
This week-long journey sets out from Mumbai and climbs north through the palace cities of Rajasthan to Delhi. Glide across Lake Pichola in Udaipur, explore Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur and dine among the Bikaner sand dunes. The final days bring a tiger-country game drive in Ranthambore, the abandoned Mughal city of Fatehpur Sikri and breakfast near the Taj Mahal.

Day 1MumbaiOn board, en route to Udaipur
Your journey begins with a welcome, registration and tour briefing at the Taj Mahal Palace hotel. From there you transfer to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus to board the Maharajas' Express, which pulls out for Udaipur late in the morning. Lunch and dinner are served on board.

Day 2UdaipurOn board, en route to Jodhpur
After breakfast the train arrives in Udaipur, the city of lakes. Take a boat ride on Lake Pichola, then visit the City Palace and its Crystal Gallery before lunch at an exclusive venue. In the afternoon, explore the old city on foot and by tuk-tuk, then return to the train for dinner as it heads for Jodhpur.

Breakfast is served as the countryside rolls by. In Jodhpur, visit Mandore Garden and the Umaid Bhawan Museum, then return to the train for lunch. Later in the afternoon, explore the mighty Mehrangarh Fort before dinner at an exclusive venue and a late departure for Bikaner.

Day 4Deshnok → BikanerOn board, en route to Jaipur
The train pauses early at Deshnok, where you can choose to visit the famous rat temple. Breakfast is served on the short run into Bikaner, where you visit Lalgarh Palace and take a walking tour of the havelis. After lunch on board, see Junagarh Fort, then head out to the sand dunes for sundowner cocktails and a barbecue dinner with folk dances.

Day 5JaipurOn board, en route to Ranthambore
After breakfast, spend the morning at Amber Fort, the City Palace and the Albert Hall Museum, returning to the train for lunch. In the evening, dinner is hosted at the Rambagh Palace before the Maharajas' Express sets off overnight for Sawai Madhopur, the gateway to Ranthambore.

Day 6Ranthambore → Fatehpur SikriOn board, en route to Agra
Rise early for a game drive in Ranthambore National Park, then return to the train for breakfast. Lunch is served on board on the way to Fatehpur Sikri, where you spend the afternoon in the deserted Mughal city. Back on the train, enjoy an Indian evening followed by dinner.

Day 7Agra → Delhi
Arrive in Agra at dawn and visit the Taj Mahal, followed by breakfast at Taj Khema. Rejoin the train for the run to Delhi, with a final lunch on board before you say farewell to the Maharajas' Express in the afternoon.

What is the pace like, and are there early starts?
Days are full, with guided sightseeing most mornings and afternoons and returns to the train for meals. Expect a couple of early mornings: the game drive in Ranthambore National Park comes first thing on Day 6, and on Day 7 you arrive in Agra at dawn for the Taj Mahal. At Deshnok the visit to the famous rat temple is your choice.
