This classic three-night journey crosses South Africa from the grasslands of the Highveld to the mountains and winelands of the Cape. Along the way you tour Kimberley's Big Hole and Diamond Mine Museum and stroll through the preserved Victorian village of Matjiesfontein before arriving beneath Table Mountain.

Day by day
Day 1PretoriaOn board
Check in two hours early at the train's own station in Pretoria for a tour and a look around its museum. After departure the train crosses the Witwatersrand goldfields and the open grasslands of the Highveld. Dinner is formal.

Day 2KimberleyOn board
After breakfast, enjoy a guided tour of Kimberley's Diamond Mine Museum and the Big Hole, the diamond town's most famous sight. The rest of the day is spent on board as the train continues south.

Day 3The Karoo & MatjiesfonteinOn board
Wake to the wide spaces of the Karoo. After lunch you can leave the train at Whitehill Siding and walk about 5 km into Matjiesfontein with a crew member, or stay aboard until the train arrives. Explore the historic village and its platform museum, then descend the escarpment through a series of tunnels towards Worcester.

Day 4Cape Town
Breakfast and lunch are served as the train winds through the Cape. The journey ends at Cape Town Station in the afternoon.

How long is the Pretoria to Cape Town journey?
It is three nights and four days, covering roughly 1,600 km. You leave Pretoria in the morning of day one and reach Cape Town in the afternoon of day four.
Which excursions are included?
You get a guided tour of Kimberley's Diamond Mine Museum and the Big Hole, plus a stop in the historic village of Matjiesfontein. Before departure there is also a tour of the station in Pretoria and its museum.
Can I walk into Matjiesfontein?
Yes. After lunch on day three, guests can leave the train at Whitehill Siding and walk about 5 km into the village with a member of staff. Everyone else stays aboard until the train arrives.
What should I wear at dinner?
Dinner on board is formal every evening on this journey. Gentlemen wear a collar and tie, and ladies usually opt for cocktail or evening wear.
Does this journey run in the other direction?
Yes, it also runs from Cape Town to Pretoria with the same highlights in reverse order. Both directions are three nights.
